Gabriel paced around the study, wishing he could go for an early morning ride. He pulled the curtain aside, but the rainstorm showed no sign of easing. He collapsed into a chair before the fireplace. Even the flames in the grate looked sullen. It was a perfectly miserable day. Just like yesterday, when he found out that Gina had been ruined and forced to accept Lord Lindsay’s marriage proposal.

He jumped up from the chair, unable to sit still. He paced the room again, tracing the patterns in the Persian carpet. He’d overheard Regina speaking with Aunt Agatha about an incident last year, where the earl had kissed her against her will and spit at her. The man hated half-bloods and humans. How could she be sure the brute wouldn’t hurt her? That he had truly changed?

Gabe didn’t care if their family was ruined. Mageborn society didn’t like them anyway. Gina should have refused the earl. He blinked away the moisture in his eyes. She was too important to him to risk losing.

A soft knock sounded on the study door. “The Earl of Lindsay is here to see you, milord.” Deeds opened the door, and the man who’d been occupying Gabe’s thoughts entered the room.

Lord Lindsay didn’t look like most mageborn lords, who spent their time indoors in the city. Instead he looked like an outdoorsman—broad shouldered, muscular, tanned skin. Gabe wasn’t as tall as him. Not yet. But in a few years he would be, if he got his father’s height.

Gabe glared at the magelord who had ruined his sister.

One of the earl’s eyebrows went up. “Lord Harbrook.”

“Lindsay.” He crossed his arms. “Why are you here?” Gina would chastise him for his rudeness, but she and his aunt were still sleeping.

“Your sister didn’t tell you? I’m here to train you.”

The breath stuck in Gabe’s throat. He swallowed hard. “You’re going to teach me magic?” Then he shook his head. It had to be a joke. The earl hated half-bloods.

Lindsay walked around the study. He assessed the massive oak desk, the wingback chairs, the settee, and the end tables. “This room will do, if we move the furniture out of the way. What do you think?”

“You’re serious.” He couldn’t believe it. His own uncles wouldn’t train him.

“Very much so.” Lindsay picked up one of the leather chairs by the fireplace and placed it against the wall. “Now come help me, so we can get started.”

Gabe scrambled to grab the other chair. He snuck glances at the earl whenever the man wasn’t looking. “Why are you going to teach me?”

Lindsay picked up the black lacquered coffee table. “Because your sister asked me to.”

“That’s it? Because she asked?” Nobody else had ever agreed when asked. After he finished moving his item, he waited by the settee, the last piece of furniture left. It would take both of them to pick it up.

The earl grinned as he crossed towards him, and suddenly looked less formidable. “Nothing slips by you, does it? You’re right. There was a little more to it than that, but that’s between your sister and me.
