Once you reach the top of the mountain, there’s nowhere else to go except down.

A rattling/scraping sound dragged me out of the darkness and I slowly rolled over, prying my eyes open. My door was slightly ajar, letting in just enough light to reveal Mom standing in my closet hanging my dresses on the rail. When she was done with that, she went through the drawers in my dresser one by one, tsking under her breath as she looked for space to insert the stack of neatly-folded undergarments.

Her task complete, she tiptoed around the mounds of stuff on my floor with exaggerated care, freezing like a burglar caught in the act when she realized I was watching her.

“Oh, I’m so sorry!” she exclaimed. “I didn’t mean to wake you up.”

“S’alright,” I mumbled, sitting up and rubbing the gunk out of my eyes. I didn’t even remember going to bed. Forcing the warding spell onto my Stone must have taken more out of me than I thought.

“How do you feel? How’s your leg?”

“It’s fine. Is Peter back?” I wasn’t convinced he’d tell me if he ran into another demon.

“No, he’s still out with his friends. Do you know where Dara went? I haven’t seen her in hours.”

“Peter picked her up.” I looked around for Amy but there was no sign of her. I wondered if she was still in Peter’s bed, although Mom probably would have noticed her if she was.

“Were they planning to be back for dinner? Your father will be home soon.”

“He didn’t say. I doubt it.”

“Oh, that’s too bad. I made pot roast. And veggie lasagna,” she added, just in case I thought she’d forgotten about my dietary preferences. “Did you hear back from Cameron?”

“Cameron?” I frowned.

“You said he was going to call you about coming over. I made the cake you wanted. He’d better get here before Dara sees it or there’ll be nothing left of it,” she grumbled, but in a teasing sort of way.

I’d completely forgotten about the cake. I only needed it to bribe Dara and I only mentioned Cameron as an excuse to get Mom to make it. “I’ll call him.” What I was actually going to do was wait a few minutes and then tell her something came up and he couldn’t come over.

“Ask him if he wants to join us for dinner,” she suggested brightly. “There’ll be enough for everyone.”

I tried not to roll my eyes. I had more important things to do. “Okay.”

“We’ll eat at six. Wear something nice for him,” she warned. I did roll my eyes at that but she was already heading out the door.

I scrubbed my face with my hands, trying to shake off the last few cobwebs tangling my thoughts. My sleep schedule was completely messed up ever since Amy talked me into murdering her mother but it was a small price to pay for becoming a real demon hunter.

I still had a few hours before I killed Faximbral but I needed to practice my secret weapon a couple of times before then to make sure I had it down.
