Caring for the caregiver

It is easy for carers to focus on the person with dementia and forget about themselves. However, if you don’t look after yourself, your health will eventually break down, and you may not be able to continue providing care. Far from being selfish, attending to your own needs is absolutely essential for the sake of the person with dementia.

Accepting help

Caring for someone with dementia is not something people should expect to do on their own. Some find it easy enough to ask for help. Others find it difficult to acknowledge that they are not able to cope. There is no particular reason why one person should expect to be the sole carer for an individual who has a chronic, disabling neurological disease. Men in particular often want to care independently for their wives, but this can mean that they become isolated and lose perspective, perhaps not recognising when their care is inadequate. If the carer refuses help, it is hard for others to know when and whether to offer assistance again. If a sole carer cannot continue, it may be difficult for the person with dementia to accept input from others if no one else has previously been involved with them.
