THE DELIVERY COMES FIRST
Suzy, Wilmot, the Chief, and Ina whirled round in a panic as the bedroom door swung open and crashed against the wall.
Suzyâs first thought was that the Watch Frogs had found them, but standing in the doorway was a lanky Hydroborean youth with orange fronds, wearing a pair of ill-fitting dungarees and dripping water onto the floor. They stared at one another in surprise, before the youth raised a trembling hand to point at them.
âIna!â he said. âItâs them! Those are the outworlders the Watch Frogs are looking for!â
âAmlod, what are you doing here?â Ina snapped. âYouâre supposed to be at work.â
Amlod blinked and seemed to forget his shock for a moment. âThey sent us home because of the red alert,â he said. âThere are dangerous criminals on the loose. Except theyâre not on the loose. Theyâre here!â He lunged forward and grabbed Ina by the hand. âGet away from my sister!â he shouted as he tried to drag her out of the door.
Suzy grabbed Inaâs other hand and dug her heels in, pulling back against Amlod. âBut weâre not criminals!â she protested.
âAnd weâre certainly not dangerous,â said Wilmot, taking hold of Suzy and joining in the tug-of-war.
âI canât do much to help, Iâm afraid,â said the Chief, hovering above them. âBut I want you both to know Iâm with you in spirit.â He chuckled. âAnother little ghostly joke for you.â
Ina grimaced. âLet go of me, all of you!â she shouted. Amlod was the first to release his hold, meaning that Ina was catapulted back into Suzy and Wilmot. The three of them crashed to the ground together.
âThank you,â said Ina pointedly as she got to her feet. âNow, if youâve finished trying to tear me in half, perhaps we can sit down and talk about all this.â
âSorry,â mumbled Suzy. âI thought he was going to fetch the Watch Frogs.â
âI was,â said Amlod. âI still am! Youâre wanted fugitives, here to take our magic.â
Suzy threw her hands up. âWhy does everyone think weâre here to steal magic?â she said. âIt makes no sense.â
âYes, it does,â said Amlod. âEveryone knows that magic is extinct everywhere except in Hydroborea.â
Suzy frowned at him, thinking he must be joking, but his expression was deadly earnest. âYou canât really believe that, can you?â she said.
Inaâs eyebrows shot up. âAre you saying itâs not true?â
âItâs not true at all,â said Suzy. âThereâs loads of magic out there.â
âThatâs right,â said Wilmot. âIâm from a magical world myself, and there are hundreds of others.â
Amlod shook his head vigorously. âThere canât be. Itâs just one of the basic facts of life. The Gilded Tower is the source of all magic. The other worlds got jealous and kept trying to take it for themselves, so the city fathers hid Hydroborea where it could never be found. All the other worlds fell into chaos without our power to sustain them, so now Hydroborea soldiers on alone.â
âSays who?â asked Suzy.
âSays everyone,â Ina replied with a shrug. âEvery teacher, every historian.
