BACK ON THE CASE

Jessie is quiet as we prepare to drive to Angela Grayson’s place. I know that I was consumed with a convoluted mixture of emotions when I took her, but I don’t regret it. It was raw and real, exactly as it should be, and I hope she feels the same.

“Are you okay?” I ask her as she fixes her hair in the bathroom mirror.

“Yes, I’m good.” Her reflection shoots me a sheepish grin.

I approach her from behind and rest my hands on her hips. “Good because there’s a lot more of that in your future.” I kiss her neck but release her before the passion creeps back up on me. We have to focus on the task at hand.

“Have you always been this, well, dominant?” she asks me.

“That’s hard to say. At work, maybe. But sex? I can’t say because I don’t sleep around. My work consumed me. But you awakened something in me. My father once told me that when things are right, you get to be yourself and share your innermost desires with your partner. That’s what it feels like with you. Like I can be myself. Does that make sense?”

“I’m glad you like to be in charge. I guess my innermost desire is to be desired by you,” she smirks and I kiss the tip of her nose.

“Then you’re one lucky little girl because I definitely desire you.”

Lunch traffic is going to put us reaching the woman’s house at around two o’clock. I cross my fingers that she’ll be home and not at work. We haven’t eaten, and I’m not looking forward to having to stake the place out until she comes home.

I glance over at Jessie sitting in my passenger seat. There’s something different about her now. Knowing that she’s mine makes her even sexier to me. She catches my stare and reaches out to take my hand. “I think we’re here,” she nudges me and I scan the house numbers, pulling over across the street from Angela’s building.

“Alright, let’s do this,” I tell Jessie and exit the car.

We have no real game plan and haven’t discussed how we’ll approach this woman. Since Jessie is the lawyer and the calmer head, I intend to let her lead the interaction. Should things go sideways, I’ll step in. I’ve managed to persuade some of the hardest men in the city to trust me with their money. That commanding confidence might come in handy in this situation, too.

Jessie rings the buzzer and a woman’s voice comes through the static, “Yes.”

“Angela Grayson, my name is Jessica Mitchell. I’d like to speak to you about a phone conversation you had last night. May I come in?”

“Are you with the police?” the voice cracks.

“No, I’m an attorney. You’re not in any trouble. Can I please come in?” Jessie repeats, her voice calm and patient.

I shake my head at her, certain that the woman is going to refuse to see us. “Just wait,” Jessie whispers. We stand there for a moment that feels like an eternity then the door buzzes and I grab the handle.
