A week later, we brought all four patients home. Jacqueline could take nice deep breaths, though she still had a bit more healing to do. We’d had her leg checked, and it was healing, too. It’d be a longer battle for it, than her for ribs, but things were moving in the right direction.

Tyler was losing his mind from having to stay inside the past week, but I promised him we’d go running again once I was home. We’d also gotten the lab tests back today, and we were going to have a pizza lunch to talk about the news with Tyler. He’d talked to Doc about what the testing was for and why we needed to do it. Jacqueline wondered if it’d added to his anxiety over the past few days.

When we finished, and Tyler was sipping his juice, he looked between us.

“Mr. Deer, are you my father?” He asked but then immediately looked into his lap.

“I am.” Exhaling, I leaned closer. “I am.”

“Will you come to visit us?” He asked.

“Where are you going?” Now it was my turn to look at Jacqueline.

“We lived…”

“Oh no, baby,” Jacqueline reassured him. “We’re not going back there.”

“We’re staying here with Daddy?”

Shit! The word knocked me on my ass and pulled reality right into my lap. I was a father.

“I’d like it if you both stayed. There’s plenty of room and I love your mother. You were the man in her life though, so I have to ask you. Do you want to stay here? It’d mean that I’d step in to take care of you both and give you a break. You’re exceptional at it, but let me handle it for a few years, okay?”

Tyler thought about it and then nodded. “I’ll ride bikes while you protect us.” He smiled big, and it sent me and Jacqueline into a fit of laughter.

“Deal.”

Tyler came over and hugged me tightly. “I’m happy you’re my daddy. You do a good job of taking care of us.”

“Will you let me know if that changes?” I asked him while holding him tighter. This was my boy.

“Yup!” And then he went back to his juice box.
