4.5 Types of Digital Evidence

Depending on their status, data may be categorized in one of three groups [32, 36]: active data, ambient data, and archive data. Active data include files that are, at the time of collection, normally stored and maintained in the storage. In other words, these files are easily accessible, without a need to re-construct them, although they may be otherwise protected (encrypted). Ambient data are files that have been deleted, and thus exist in the disk storage possibly fragmented. If the files were deleted from the computer device, accessing them may require scanning the disk storage in order for them to be reconstructed. Finally, archive data describe data that have been stored in backup data stores.
