The longer I sit on Mary’s bed, the worse I feel about my current situation. As overwhelming as everything is now, I find I miss Charles. I miss the way he looks at me as if I’m the only girl in the world; hungry, and lustful.

Troy keeps coming in and out of the room, checking up on me, making sure I am okay, and letting me know that Mary is on her way. He’s done this a few times already. I guess I always knew he had a bit of a soft spot for me, but having a man like Charles makes those like Troy sort of . . . well, redundant.

They’re pleasers who’d have you feeling like a princess for a day, and who would shower you with gifts, and compliment you. But, they’d never make you feel alive. Not the way Charles does. I can’t help but think about his sexy eyes that go into that pure rage, and the electricity that shoots through my body every time he touches me, as well as the force of his intimidating presence, even when he’s angry.

“Hey, baby girl,” Mary’s voice cuts through my thoughts. “How are you holding up?” She’s standing in the doorway, looking at me as if I’m an abuse victim. “Troy said you came over in a hurry, trying to get away from something.”

I’m already on my feet, and rushing into Mary’s arms. She wraps herself around me, stroking my head. “Did your old man try it on, again? You know, that shit we talked about?”

“No, no, it’s nothing like that,” I say. “It’s very different, sort of strange, and I just don’t know how to feel about it.”

“Tell me what’s going on. Maybe I can help you figure it out?” Mary says, taking my hand. We walk over to the bed and flop down on it.

I hate the way she’s looking at me. I don’t want her pity; that’s not why I did this, but what else could I expect? She is probably scared that something has happened. That I am in danger, or hurt, or just need that look of pity and desperation.

But, I tell her everything, anyway. I tell her about my dad and his gambling debts, and about Charles coming to my house and near killing my dad; I explain how he stole my panties and how I found them in a drawer in his desk at home. We speak for what feels like hours about the twisted situation I find myself in; and my parents having given me away to write off their debts, and how Charles treats me, both the good and bad, I hold nothing back.

I guess – thinking about it realistically, he has treated me very well. That’s why I want to go back there. Because he has his outbursts only because he’s not used to people saying no or questioning him.

“I’ll tear that motherfucker’s throat out,” Troy shouts from the hallway, bursting through the door.

“Troy? What the fuck, dude?” Mary shouts at him.
