fundamentally impossible to prove that the law of nature is actually based on something toto coelo [i.e. totally] different from what we in psychology call archetype. (AA: 70)

Indeed, just as macro scopic events aren’t fundamental, but the aggregate results of many micro scopic ones, under this broader view of synchronicity causality isn’t a fundamental organizing principle either, but a regular compound outline of many microscopic synchronistic events. In other words, causality is to synchronicity as Newtonian mechanics is to quantum physics. Causal regularities are just discernible local contours of much more subtle, global patterns of similarity in nature. For Jung, ultimately everything in nature unfolds according to similarity-based associations.

Notice what he is doing: he is extrapolating the natural basis for cognitive associations in the psyche to a universal basis for the organization of all events in nature. He seems to regard the whole universe as a supraordinate cosmic mind—a “greater and more comprehensive consciousness”—operating on the principle of association by similarity, just as the human psyche does. As a matter of fact, as we shall see in the next chapter, this may be precisely what his metaphysical position entails.
