CHAPTER 22

I don't get a text back from Olivia until I've been home for a while. I walk in and collapse on the couch. I'm exhausted and the welts on my chest hurt. Olivia's text startles me. I've been sitting here for an hour, numb and empty. I pick up the phone. "Glad you made it out. I expect to see you first thing." That's it. She didn't ask if I was okay or anything. I shake my head. Sometimes I feel like I'm just a tool for the Sword.

"No one cares, Sasha." I really believe it. At this moment, I'm not sure I deserve anything. What was wrong with me? I struggle to get up, head to the kitchen, and pull out a glass. Tonight I'd leave the wine alone. Tonight was for whiskey. I pour it into the glass and down it, feeling it burn, not bothering to sip. The warmth spreads and I go turn on the shower. I need to wash tonight off of my body.

By the time I'm in the shower, the whiskey has done its job. I barely notice the sting as the water hits the welts. I cry. What am I turning into? I stay in the shower until the water begins to cool. After I dry off, I put on an oversized t-shirt and crawl into bed.

That night I dream about Luke. He's holding me hostage in the secret room. I can't escape. I wake up in a cold sweat, breathing hard like I'd just run a race, panicked. Then I remember where I am, that he's dead. "Sasha, he can't hurt you." It's 4:30 a.m. I know I'm not going back to sleep. So I get up, make coffee. I guess I'll be at work early.

A few hours later, I'm in Olivia's office, waiting for her to arrive. I'm scrolling through the news to see if anything has happened with Luke, but don't find anything. I guess he hasn't been found. Not that I have to worry about it. The Sword would take care of everything.

"Hey, Sasha." Olivia said as she walked into her office, "been here long?"

"I couldn't sleep, so yeah, for a while." I answer her. I give her a moment to put down her things and sit before I start in on her.

"Look, last night went fine, but there were things you didn't tell me about Luke. He tied me up. He hurt me. You didn't tell me he was into that." I pull my top down and show her the welts, still red and angry, on my chest. "I almost bolted, but instead I was able to convince him to give me a turn."

Olivia looked shocked. "We didn't know. I'm sorry. You've got to believe me. Do you want to have the nurse look at you?" she offered.

"No. I'm fine." I put the shirt back. "I convinced him to give me a turn, so I handcuffed him to the bed and strapped his feet down. That's where I left him.
