Chapter 30

The sudden buzz of the intercom made Danielle jump. She looked at the video feed and saw Bird Flynn standing at the door with a strange woman. Shit. How did they know where she was? Where the hell was her bag? She looked around and saw it next to the door. Tossing lipsticks, foundation and tissues aside, she found the Beretta.

She closed her fingers around the cold metal and took a breath. Did she even need this?

They leaned on the buzzer again. Danielle stuck the gun into the pocket of her jeans and pulled down her top. No way was she letting them in.

She slipped on her boots and jacket and went down to open the door. How far away was Mark? He hadn’t said whether he was coming straight back. The gates, which had closed behind them, felt more like a trap than protection.

‘Oh, you just caught me. I was heading out.’ She looked from Bird to the woman, who was drawing on a cigarette.

‘Where is she?’ the woman demanded.

‘Who are you looking for?’ Danielle said.

The woman brought her face close to Danielle’s. Her breath smelled of alcohol. ‘You know who I’m talking about.’

‘I’ve no idea.’

‘Yes, you do. You know exactly who I’m talking about.’ She crossed her arms. ‘Bird, get her to tell you.’

Turning to Bird, Danielle jerked her thumb back at the woman. ‘What the fuck is this?’

Bird looked past her. ‘Calm down, Marion. We’ll get our answers, just—’

Marion launched herself at Danielle, screaming. Danielle spun her around, threw her against the wall and held her there while she pulled out the gun. Bird took a step towards them. She aimed the gun at his face while the other hand kept a tight grip on Marion.

‘Woah.’ Bird stepped back, his hands up. ‘Come on, Danielle, you know me. We’re not looking for trouble.’

‘Oh, really?’

‘You’re hurting me, bitch,’ Marion cried out.

Danielle tightened her grip. Bird stood frozen to the spot.

‘You turn up on my doorstep demanding to see someone I don’t know, then you come at me. What do you expect me to do?’

‘It’s a baby. A little girl,’ Bird said.

‘Oh, right. I see. And why the fuck would you think I have a baby girl?’ She fixed Bird with a hard stare.

‘Look, can you put down the gun so we can talk like adults?’ Bird said.

‘I didn’t notice this cow talking like an adult.’

‘Marion is . . . passionate.’

‘Is that what you call it?’

Bird lowered his hands. ‘Please, put that away, Danielle. Marion meant no harm.’

‘You need to learn to control your bitch,’ Danielle said.

‘Fuck you,’ Marion said.

Beyond Bird’s shoulder, Danielle saw Mark’s car come into view. At least she had back up now. She released her hold on Marion, took a step away, but kept the gun pointed in their direction. Marion pulled at her dress and patted down her hair.

‘Are you going to let her do this to me?’ Marion demanded of Bird.

He didn’t answer, his eyes fixed on Danielle.

Mark drove towards them, leaped out of the car and ran up the steps.
