And since I could not find anything else to do and because I am incapable of leisure, I tried to translate the almost divine beginning of Troades—compared to which there is nothing more brilliant in that genre—into our language and meter . . . In any case, because of the ease with which I handled most of it, this lovely folly [amabilis haec insania] teased me and I thought that I would achieve something worthwhile if I started work on the entire tragedy, particularly because my distance from my books did not allow that I dedicate myself to more important studies . . . Incidentally, I dedicated them [the Trojanerinnen] to you, most learned man, because I could—if an excuse were necessary—make plausible on your, an eyewitness’s, word how I dedicated to this cause only few hours, virtually doing something else simultaneously.30
