Dax

Now that all the passengers were in the car and the doors were shut, Dax flicked his eyes around to the mirrors. Bikers trickled out of the parking lot in ones and twos, pointing their bikes in the direction Dax drove.

“Did you see which way the boys went, Melinda?” Ragnar asked, leaning over the middle of the front seat.

“They’re probably only a minute or two ahead of us. If Slim here can show some love to the gas pedal, we’ll probably catch up to them,” she replied.

Tallulah sat on her knees, facing out the back window, and watched her bar disappear in the distance as they rounded a gentle corner. Sighing, she turned around and sat, her head sagging into her hands.

Dax focused ahead, trying to catch up to the van, with only occasional check-ins with the mirrors.

“Why didn’t you get in the van, Melinda?” Ragnar asked.

“Sippi trapped his scrawny ass behind his pedal steel guitar and my bass. There was no way I was fitting into that mess, and I knew you had your ride. So, I slammed the doors and got them moving.”

“Quick thinking.”

Tallulah seemed to have recovered. She sat up and stared out the window. “What kind of trouble did you bring into my bar tonight, Ragnar?”

“I’m sorry, Tallulah.” He sighed, sagging in on himself a little. “I’m not entirely sure.”

Dax caught a wary and almost frightened glance tossed his way by Ragnar.

“Who were those guys?” she asked, shifting tracks. “I’ve never welcomed that gang into my place, but when they’ve showed up, they’ve always behaved.”

“I don’t think they’re the local thugs, Lue.” Ragnar ran a hand through his sweaty hair.

“That’s my fault,” Dax said, finally speaking up. “I kind of…well…” He looked in the mirrors. “I kind of reduced the membership of the locals a few months back.”

“‘Reduced the membership’? What the hell does that mean?” Tallulah asked.

“They kidnapped some acquaintances of mine, and I wanted to retrieve them. The bikers objected, and things got violent.” Dax shrugged, glancing into the rearview mirror when several flashes of light caught his attention. The bikers had formed up and were behind him, slowly gaining.

Ragnar snorted, turning his head toward Tallulah. “If rumors are true, he killed them all and burned down their bar.”

“And you brought this asshole into my bar? I thought you were my friend, Ragnar.”

He groaned. “I am your friend, Lue. I just wanted to invite him out to get to know him a bit since some fairly sophisticated rune magic is being used against him. I figured⁠—”

“That this was far enough away so your father wouldn’t get word of it?” Tallulah finished the sentence for him. “I wish you’d found some other bar to meet at. Preferably one where the owner wasn’t your friend.”

Ragnar made a contrite-sounding grunt. “I know. I’m sorry, Lue. I’ll figure out how to make it up to you. I’ll get some folks out there and we’ll help you clean up the place and get it back in good shape.”

“That’s the least you can offer.
