Twelve

At the last moment, Leighton threw the steering wheel to the right and yanked the hand brake, sending the truck spinning around. As it did so, he righted the wheel and released the brake, and the truck skidded sideways before rocking to a halt against the bushes bordering the road on the far side of the bend. The Defender went crashing into the trees behind them.

‘Bloody hell,’ Lawrence managed, after a moment, realising he’d been holding his breath.

‘All right?’ Leighton asked, glancing briefly in his direction as he flicked the truck’s hazard lights on.

‘Just about.’

‘Don’t move. I’ll be back in a sec,’ Leighton replied, opening the door.

‘Do not go anywhere near –’ Lawrence stopped as his colleague jumped down onto the tarmac and made for the other vehicle. Swearing under his breath, he shuffled across the long front seat to reach the open door, taking care not to brush against the naked wires beneath the steering wheel. As he slid down onto the road, he was hit by a wave of dizziness, and had to grab hold of the side of the truck to keep himself upright. Concluding, once it had passed, that the best thing he could do was probably call for backup, he retrieved Leighton’s mobile. To his relief, there looked to be a strong signal, and he placed the call. As he imparted the details of approximately where they were, another vehicle came around the corner. It slowed as it approached, and Lawrence shook his head before wedging the mobile between his ear and his shoulder to leave his good arm free to wave it on. The car drew to a stop regardless. With a sigh, Lawrence hurriedly finished filling the woman at the other end of the line in on the situation before ringing off and tossing the phone into the seat behind him. By the time he’d managed to retrieve his identification from his jacket pocket, the driver had climbed out.

‘I need you to get back into your vehicle and keep driving, please, sir,’ Lawrence said, displaying his warrant card.

‘But –’ the man began.

‘Now.’

‘Is there anything I can –’

‘Please get back in the car.’

The man did as bid, albeit with a rather bad grace, slamming the door behind himself. As he pulled away, a car approached from the opposite direction. To Lawrence’s relief, when he waved that one on, the driver simply raised a hand in acknowledgement and kept going. As the vehicle disappeared around the corner, Lawrence saw Leighton heading back towards him, the tip of a rifle held between his right thumb and forefinger. As he neared, Lawrence took in the details of the tattoo that stretched across his chest. Like the one on his back, it was asymmetrical, but that was as far as the similarities went. The botanical design resembled a silk painting, with its component parts separated by narrow ink-free lines and filled in variations of blue and black ombre. Lawrence had never seen anything quite like it.

‘You need to sit down,’ Leighton informed him, leaning to slide the weapon into the truck’s footwell.
