The four men were wedged together in the taxi. Paris was freezing. At half past seven in the morning, the city was ghostly pale and the wind was chasing the ice powder along the ground.

The thinnest of the four, on a fold-down seat, had a cigarette stuck to his lower lip and handcuffs on his wrists. The burliest, with a heavy jaw, wearing a thick overcoat and bowler hat, watched the railings of the Bois de Boulogne flashing past.

‘Do you want me to make a noisy scene?’ the handcuffed man offered amiably. ‘With contortions, foaming at the mouth, swearing and the works …?’

Maigret grunted, removed the cigarette from the man’s lips and opened the door, because they had arrived at Porte de Bagatelle:

‘Don’t try to be too clever!’

The avenues of the Bois de Boulogne were empty, white as cut stone and as hard. A dozen or so people were pacing up and down on the corner of a bridle path, and a photographer wanted to snap the approaching group. But Li’l Louis raised his arm to cover his face, as he’d been advised to do.

Maigret, looking surly, turned his head, bearlike, studying everything, the new apartment buildings on Boulevard Richard-Wallace, their shutters still closed, a few labourers on bicycles coming from Puteaux, a lit-up tram, two concierges walking towards them, their hands purple with cold.

‘Is that it?’ he asked.

The previous day, he had allowed the following announcement to be published in the newspaper:
