Mary was pleased with the unexpected intrusion in her day. Jack, for his part, was focussed, with his normal fawning for the lady cast aside for their meeting.

“I haven’t got long, Jack.”

“Have you got somewhere we can go for five minutes?”

“Five minutes, is that all I get these days?”

“I need your help.”

Mary looked him in the eye and saw a different side to her admirer. Gone was the greying detective who looked tired each time she saw him. She always thought Jack was going through the motions and allowing his career to drift. He was rarely inspired or motivated for the mundane cases. This time, she saw a raging fire burning in his eyes.

“Come into my office.”

“Am I allowed in there?”

“Probably not but it will be quiet.”

Jack followed her as Mary set a sharp pace. On any other occasion, he would have admired her from behind. Not this time; he only had thoughts of the case in his head. She was his expert eye and able to decipher what he carried under his arm. She was his hope of having a key to unlock the case.

“In here. You will need to be quick.”

The office was immaculate, just like the lady he was visiting. She was always so organised in the chaotic world he lived in. Jack reached out with the sketch and unrolled it from under his arm. He placed items on its corners to stop it from curling back.

“I take it there has been another victim?”

“Yes.”

“Where do I come in?”

“I need to know everything. Tell me anything you can about the sketch. Do you recognise it?”

“It’s the same artist as last time if you can call him that.”

“Are you sure?”

“That bit you can be certain on. It’s the same paper and the same material. Even the depth of the lines is the same. If you put the two next to each other, anyone would be able to see it.”

“And could you swear to it?”

“If you mean, could I be an expert witness, then yes, I could. Tell me, though, did he do the damage to her he has drawn?”

Mary pointed her pencil to the face, the ear and particularly the breasts. They had been carved, straightening the shape of the curves.

“Yes, but how can you tell he has mutilated the breasts? They are perfect on the drawing.”

“Exactly. No woman is that symmetrical as a man who has had two marriages should know.”

Jack blushed and looked downwards, directly at the evidence.

“I’d better be going.”

“I thought you might. It might be that you would get the opportunity to check another lady if you made a little more effort. I do wonder whether you only want me for my art expertise.”

“Sorry,” mumbled Jack. The difficulty in getting the words out was only too apparent.

“Look, get out there and catch this sick monster. Then, perhaps, we might have a little celebration together.”

“I’d like that,” said Jack.

“Then go and find him. For me.”
