Chapter 10
PC cocked her head. âReally? Seems awfully soon to get a tox back. What was in the report?â
Tranâs eyes flicked to the well and back to the detective. âDr. Mackâs still waiting on the tox screen. When he opened up Roger Haney, he found most of his remaining blood pooled in his abdomen and lungs. But it hadnât clottedâit was still liquid.â
âIâve never heard of that before.â
âHaney took blood thinnersâhad to go to his doctor once a week to test the level of warfarin in his blood. Dr. Mack ran that same test, and his level was off the chart. Even if he hadnât been shot, he almost certainly would have died from internal bleeding.â
The bruise on Rogerâs arm. âWhat do you think that means? Two people who wanted Roger Haney dead, or one person who was taking no chances?â
âThat is an excellent question. Sanchez and I are going to look around Rogerâs house tomorrow afternoon. I think two is probably the earliest we can pick up the keys. You wanna come?â
âSure. Iâll meet you there.â
Red and blue strobes flickered across the ancient tree. An EMT jogged through the gate with a backboard and a body bag. Dr. DuPree was already rigged up and ready to be lowered back down into the well.
A raindrop kissed PCâs cheek. The angry thunderheads were now overhead, and lightning flashed inside them, desperate for an escape. âIâll be right back.â
She trotted out to her vehicle and retrieved the oversized golf umbrella that lived in her car. A fat drop of rain smacked her arm, then another, and another. Racing the downpour, she opened the brolly as she ran, making it to the operation as the bottom fell out of the sky and rain bucketed down so hard that it bounced off the ground, creating a thick mist a foot or so off the grass.
Tran ducked under the nylon canopy. âGood thinking.â
PC sheltered the well as much as she could with the umbrella. Most of it was covered, but that meant that frigid rainwater splashed down her and Tranâs backs. They both strained their necks to see what the anthropologist was doing.
McIlwraith lowered the cadaver pouch and backboard down after her. Carefully, she slid the skeleton into the body bag, moving it as little as possible. Then she unclipped a roll of twine from her belt and tied it around the container, apparently to keep the fragile bones from sliding around in the pouch. Once she was satisfied with the twine, she picked up the wrapped body bag and carefully strapped it to the backboard, which was dangling vertically down the shaft.
Dupree gestured for them to lift the backboard, jerking her thumb up. McIlwraith and one officer pulled it up. Once it was clear, they pulled the anthropologist out of the well. PC held the umbrella, Tran huddling close to her, while DuPree shucked off her climbing gear and got it packed up. McIlwraith and Woody had already taken the body to the archaeologistâs van.
