Chapter Sixteen
Mersa Matruh in N. Africa Falls to Axis
The Progress Herald, June 30, 1942
What in the world was she saying? âThat doesnât make any sense, Louise. Richie died at Midway. The Japanese navy killed him. Kirk had nothing to do with it. He was Richieâs friend.â
âSome friend. Richie wouldnât have joined up if it wasnât for him.â
âLetâs go, Irene,â Kirk said. âWeâre upsetting her.â
âYou bet Iâm upset,â Louise said. âI want both of you to leave right now.â
I wanted to get to the bottom of this. âIâd like to say goodbye to your mother first.â
âStay away from her,â Louise said loudly enough that a couple of people looked our way. She continued more quietly. âI donât want her knowing about this.â
âKnowing about what?â I said.
Kirk took me by the arm. âLetâs go.â
âButââ
âLetâs go.â
I had trouble keeping up with Kirk as he pulled me through the doorway and up the stairs to the parking lot. Once we were outside, I yanked my arm from his grasp. By this time I was the angry oneâangry enough to swear. âWhat the hell was that all about? That woman is nuts! Why would she say something like that? You and Richie were friends and she treats you like that? Why didnât you stop her? Why didnât you make it clear she was wrong?â
âBecause maybe she wasnât wrong.â
He started across the parking lot and I followed. âNow youâre as wacky as she is.â
Kirk stopped beside his rental car. âIt makes sense.â He got in.
I blocked the door so he couldnât close it. âNo, it doesnât. Youâre not leaving until you tell me what you mean. What Louise meant.â
âI canât,â he said. âLeave it alone. Please.â
âNo.â
He turned the key in the ignition. âYouâd better move.â
âYouâd rather run me over than talk to me?â
Kirk didnât answer. He put the car in gear. âPlease.â His voice broke. âI canât.â
The pain in his voice went right through me. I took a few steps back from the car. He slammed the door shut and I watched him drive away.
