WE ARRIVED AT THE SAFE HOUSE AT THE same time. Redmond drove the first vehicle, Aidan, Aisling and Cormack along for the ride. That left Cillian, Braden and me in the other vehicle. There were several people on the lawn, all quiet, as we approached the house.

“What happened?” Cormack asked Damien. His face was impassive, to the point he looked as if he was talking about a stranger rather than his father.

“I’m sorry, sir.” Damien puffed out his chest, as if bracing himself for Cormack to berate him. “We didn’t realize he’d managed to get his hands on a knife. This is on me.”

Cormack blinked several times and then shook his head. “I don’t blame you, Damien. You didn’t kill him.”

“My negligence did, sir.”

“Not really.” Cormack was oddly blasé, as if disconnected from the situation. “He clearly wanted to kill himself. He was a stubborn fool. There would be no stopping him under those circumstances.”

“We still should’ve made sure he couldn’t get his hands on a knife,” Damien argued. “I don’t know how that happened. The knife is from the kitchen even though we were careful to make sure he didn’t have access to weapons of any kind. He wasn’t allowed out of his room. We’re at a loss as to how he got the knife.”

I filed that away for later. It was a possible oversight. It was also possible that a member of Cormack’s security team slipped Emmet the knife because they wanted him to silence himself.

“How did he do it?” Aisling asked as she moved to her father’s side and slid her arm through his. She might’ve been the baby of the family, but often, when Cormack needed support, she provided it.

“He slashed his own throat.”

A few people, including me, cringed, but nobody shed a tear.

“He was gone when we found him,” Damien added. “We checked on him once an hour. He did it between checks.”

Cormack let loose a breath. “I guess I should go in.”

We trailed behind him, like a line of sad children allowing the patriarch to lead the way. Cormack was through the door first. Aisling poked her head inside long enough to see the blood on the bed and then ducked out.

“I’ll wait for him here,” she said in a low voice. “I just ... don’t want to see it.”

Redmond slung his arm around her shoulders and tugged her close enough to kiss the top of her head before releasing her. “I’ll be with him.”

Cormack didn’t say anything as he stared at his father. He would never get a chance to make amends with his parents. They were both gone. The betrayal they subjected him to would forever haunt him and there would be no way to get beyond it. He would never get the answers he needed.

It made me sad.

Because looking at Emmet’s lifeless body also made me angry, I left Cormack to mourn and headed to the back of the house. On a whim, I checked the drawers and cupboards. There wasn’t
