Chapter 23

2nd Battle of Winter Haven

Eastern Hill route

“What do you think they’re waiting for?” asked Major Chun Liu. He and Malone were watching the huge column of aliens through sets of field glasses rather than the monitors inside Malone’s command post on the back side of the hill. The aliens were gathering in four separate groups about a quarter mile from the bottom of the hill and 400 yards short of the first minefield the Rangers had waiting for them.

“Hard to say, Major,” Malone responded. “There’s too many for them all to charge forward at the same time. I’m sure they are studying the problem we have given them at the bottom of the slope. And I’m sure they have been looking for signs of mines although I doubt they will find them so easily down there.” The mines that had been placed at the bottom of the slope at the apparent maximum range of fire for the Jammies’ energy weapons were disguised in a variety of ways to make them harder to spot. Some were under small piles of rocks, while a number of them were covered only with dirt. Still others were under small native bushes put in place to conceal the mines. In addition to the ones placed where the Rangers hoped to be able to use them against the Jammie gunners a group of thirty mines had been set at intervals into the downslope face of the ten-foot high 300-foot wide pile of rocks and debris that had been added to the top of the first 20-foot high rock wall.

“Maybe the Raagaas will tell their masters, ‘Sorry, this is going to be too hard. Let’s just pack it up and go home, I’m hungry,’ “ Liu said with a guffaw.

Malone chuckled, “I could live with that, but don’t hold your breath. I wonder…, Major Liu our Berkeley rifles, they are not very accurate at over four hundred yards, correct?”

“That’s correct, sir.”

“Well I’ve never been much of a marksman and I understand that they are not as powerful as the standard infantry weapons most militaries use back on Earth. What is your experience with them?”

“Up to 400 yards they are quite reliable. A good shot can kill a demon wolf at that range if they hit it in the right spot. The caliber of the ammunition is too low to be accurate beyond that though. They expend their energy quickly and sink rapidly. The slightly higher gravity here also makes them sink faster than back on Earth. There are Rangers here who can hit a target a full mile away with the right weapon back on Earth but only a handful of them can hit a stationary target at 500 yards with one of them and not consistently at that.”

“That’s what I’ve heard. But what if we approach the problem a little differently?”

“What do you have in mind, Colonel?”

“I think we can plan on not getting all of the Jammies at one time when we set off the mines whether we detonate all three groups at the same time or individually.
