I don’t believe I’ve ever met a child who didn’t have some fears about something while growing up—nor parents who weren’t concerned about what to do about them.

... Sometimes children may be afraid of things that do what they, themselves, are trying to learn not to do. Most children pass through a stage when they have an urge to bite, for instance, and when they’re trying to master that urge, they can be very frightened of things that can or do bite.

... We can often guess what’s bothering children when they allow us to watch their play, when they’re drawing or pretending, or making up stories. And we can encourage them to go on playing about their feelings, too. The more they can handle scary things in their play, the less scary such things need to seem everywhere else.

... Sometimes children develop unaccountable fears of things that aren’t real—at least not in the way adults perceive “reality.” ... There are many times when parents can’t solve their children’s problems. Perhaps all they can do is to provide a safe, loving place and a willingness to listen and talk while the children work through whatever is bothering them. That’s what I call “being there,” and far from being a passive, helpless role, this is often the most active and helpful kind of support parents can give.
