When we were travelling this road

to fetch our grandson

while our daughter waited to give birth,

the Downs were streaked with sunlight, green and gold,

the January trees were puffs of haze,

transparent. Catkins released their pollen in a cloud.

And then, when we drove west

to meet his little brother, he was in his seat

behind us, while you steered

uphill towards the Downs, the air

full of wet snow, the stars of flakes

fluttering through our headlights, lit from underneath.

Now, as you drive the same way alone

a truck comes inching in

closer and closer, clips your nearside wing

and almost sends you spinning. Now the lanes

are clotted red with light – our children and grandchildren

travel on without us. Oh, my darling.
