Chapter Twenty-Eight

Garrett’s attempt to meet with the bartender failed—she had some car trouble out of town but would be in the next day. He or Matt would try again tomorrow. There wasn’t much more the team could do on the case until daylight, so Jax grabbed a burger and went home. He’d had no word from Abby. Dora likely hadn’t said much, and he and Abby didn’t call just to talk these days.

The next morning, Jax and Rachel headed out to Meddle Beach after meeting at the station. They’d foregone their normal briefing. Matt, having handled the night shift, went home to sleep until afternoon. Brody had his interview with Len’s Auto. Not for the first time, Jax felt the smallness of his department. Troy was right. He would eventually have to decide about hiring a full-time deputy.

That choice might be Rachel. As they stepped out of the cruiser, Jax noted the tide was out, and the wind and rain had finally subsided.

Closer to the ocean, Koa danced at Rachel’s feet, ready to go. Rachel had run by Terry’s place to grab one of Terry’s T-shirts, which Gerard had left out for her. She let Koa get a nose full of its scent before undoing the leash. “Find it.”

Koa, in her red search-and-rescue vest, ran out ahead of Jax and Rachel. Jax had been around enough working dogs to know that the vest was crucial and signaled to the animal that it was time to work.

“Now what?” Jax said.

“We follow and watch. She’s got a good track record in air scent. It’ll be a challenge with the competing smells, but if she picks up Terry, or even human, she’ll come back to me.”

“Even if it’s a corpse?”

“Absolutely. You’re convinced Terry’s dead?”

Jax updated her on the report. “I don’t see how he could be anything else.”

“You think the brother did it?”

They kicked through a strand of washed-up seaweed and hopped over a small stream of water leading back to the ocean. “Money and jealousy can drive people to murder.”

“Gerard has the jealousy thing for sure,” Rachel said.

“And that surfboard design would be the money. With Terry not willing to give up the design, an argument could have gotten out of hand, or it could have been planned. Trudy’s obtaining his phone records. They might shed some light.” Jax kept his eyes peeled for anything that appeared out of the ordinary as they made their way to the scene where the foot and likely the belt buckle had been located. “By the way, I talked with your dad.”

Rachel had her eyes glued to Koa; her jaw twitched. “How’d that go?”

He wouldn’t be telling Rachel anything she likely hadn’t heard already. But how much was his place to share? “He has his concerns.”

Rachel’s eyebrow cocked. “And you?”

Jax shrugged. “I make my own decisions.” Although he’d feel better with Jameson’s blessing. “What I have learned is to proceed with caution. Which is why I’d like you to explain to me about getting heated with Scott yesterday?”

She shrugged.
