Marty woke with a start as Williams nudged his shoulder and handed him a cup of black coffee to match his own. He had clearly fallen asleep on the couch, and a black blanket lay across his body. He rubbed his face with his hand as he sat upright before taking a gulp of the filtered coffee; a good blend, South American, he guessed. Williams took a seat in the same chair as the previous night and stared at Marty without speaking for a moment.

‘What time is it?’ Marty asked.

‘Just after eight: you had about five hours. Fell fast asleep after the third whisky.’

‘Yeah, it can do that to me,’ Marty said lightly.

Williams stayed silent for a moment; his voice was measured when he finally spoke. ‘You still wanna do this, Marty?’ he asked, and took a gulp of coffee.

‘Too bloody right I do. What other choice have I got?’

Williams nodded. ‘I get that, but I need to be one hundred per cent sure you’re gonna come through for me on this. Twenty grand is a lot of money. It’s going to take some doing pulling it together for your mystery woman – if she even turns up, that is.’

‘She’ll turn up,’ Marty said confidently.

‘OK, say she does, we need to be really clear, Marty. If I’m right, the people we’re looking to expose in all this don’t fuck about. This could get very messy and bloody serious, very quickly. It’s OK for me, I’m a free man, but if they get you back in Hawk Green, anything could happen.’

Marty closed his eyes for a second as he fought to block the images of the attempted rape, but it appeared in full colour in his head. He opened his eyes quickly and nodded as he stared straight at Williams. ‘Simon, I have never been more determined to expose anyone or anything in my life. If you’re right and this is all connected to Dave and my dad’s deaths, then I won’t rest until these bastards are held to account by the highest level of the law!’

Williams let out a loud guffaw and shook his head. ‘I wish I shared your optimism. Lately it appears the law is laughable. The reality, it seems, is that if you have enough money, you’re pretty much given carte blanche to do whatever the hell you like!’ he said before dropping his coffee cup on the glass table and standing. ‘OK, Marty. We’re in this together now. The banks open at nine and I have a meeting with my editor at ten. I hope we’ll have the money we need to make this work by midday. I’ll be back as quick as I can. In the meantime, don’t use your mobile. Someone could trace it; instead, you can use my landline. Oh, and I’d avoid telling anyone where you are, especially your lawyer. I never trust lawyers. You’ll be safer that way.’

Marty nodded, and a moment later Williams closed the apartment door as he headed to the office.
