Chapter Thirty-Five
JUNE 23, 9:30 AM
ARIZONA REPUBLIC NEWSPAPER
Thursday is hot, even for Phoenix. Approximately 120 degrees during the day. This is a record for this time of year, or at least that is what the weathermen are saying. I think they just want us to feel better. Pretty hot and sweaty. Uncomfortable weather. I stay close to my desk all day, really not wanting to venture out in the heat. I have had my share of hot weather. Let some of the young reporters go out in the heat to find their stories that they hope will make them star reporters.
I hit the telephones instead, a great invention, and make my contacts on most days now. Saves a lot of gas which has gotten expensive. Also, my old car is hot, so I donât look forward to running all over town just to hear gossip.
After a call to the police department, I learn Captain Reed is out, so no update there on Bob Davis. The desk officer is afraid to give out any information to a reporter. He doesnât really know me to know that I would be cautious about obtaining my information. I will have to call back later in the day or perhaps tomorrow.
I keep working the phones and make calls around town. Talk with a bartender that thinks he may have a tip on the church situation. He thinks a transient that had drinks at his bar and got loaded was talking about the robbery. Hell, everyone in Phoenix is talking about this robbery. Itâs such a weird case. I tell him I will stop by on my way home, and we can chat. Donât get the feeling that there is anything there of value. I do have a funny feeling about Marguerita though, she may have stumbled on something valuable by overhearing her son talk.
I stop by the Arizona Biltmore Hotel bar as promised and talk over a beer with the day bartender. Who says this guy just walked in and started drinking. Probably a drunk tourist. He wanted to talk about the church robbery with the bartender. As I said, everyone in Phoenix is talking about this case, so that is not a rare conversation. No details are given by the bartender that could lead to any verifiable information of importance in this case.
I talk with the cocktail waitress as she walks back into the bar from the patio area where she has just served gin fizzes to a couple by the pool. She is a flashy redhead dressed in a skimpy fitted one-piece shorts outfit amply showing her boobs. She makes quite an impression. Sheâs a looker. I ask her if she has heard any gossip or conversation regarding the church robbery.
She replies that everyone is talking about it. The only Mexicans she sees are the wealthy business owners in Phoenix that come into the hotel. They are the ones that can afford the Arizona Biltmore. No leads there.
Thanking the bartender again for the free beer, I depart toward home.
