Chapter Seventeen

The next day went on as usual. A great deal of work at BP, some knitting, and some friendly chatter that gave me no insight into who our traitor and killer could be. I had no idea if anyone had listened to the conversation in the cold between Simon and me. No one mentioned seeing me kissed by another man. I was grateful for that, at least.

Sarah seemed to be fading from our thoughts as more immediate things, such as rumors of all-out war, U-boat sightings, and military call-ups for friends and family, took up our attention. And at BP, we were pressing forward as quickly as we could to crack the various Enigma codes. We couldn’t mention our work anywhere at any time, not even at Bloomington Grove.

Christmas would arrive later that month, and we didn’t know if anyone would get leave. I wanted to finish this assignment and get back to London before the holidays, especially if Adam might get leave to come home as the phony war continued.

I finished my frustrating scarf at nearly bedtime the night after I’d seen the flash of light on Simon’s face. While everyone was busy elsewhere, I dropped off my scarf in my room and walked to the far end of the corridor to look around. No one was behind me. Not even the suspicious Aileen.

The doors to the left and right of me led to rooms. Gwen’s on the right, Maryellen’s to the left. While Gwen was frequently in her room when she wasn’t upstairs practicing the piano, Maryellen was constantly in the servants’ hall or her sister’s room.

The door straight ahead was again locked. I tried my room key on the door and found it fit. I wondered if all of our keys fit everyone else’s locks as I opened the door.

Flipping a switch, I shut the door behind me and found myself in a storeroom. The brick-walled space was windowless and very cold. Vegetables and tins were stored in bins and on shelves all around the shallow space. Trunks and crates were stacked three high. A single bulb hung from the ceiling. There was a door a bit to the left on the far wall behind bins of carrots and cabbages.

I slid the bins away from the door, making a great deal of noise as I did. Then I opened the door and leaned out. Any view of the door from the drive was blocked by a row of tall evergreens that ran along the end of our wing. This area must be dark even in daylight, since the evergreens had grown together into a thick hedge along the entire end of our hallway where there were no windows. However, at night when the door was opened, the light from this room would shine through the evergreens and be seen from the drive.

I heard a sound, but before I could turn, a shove sent me flying into the evergreens and a second later, the door slammed behind me.
