Briar’s less than enthusiastic at the prospect of walking into Mrs. Farley’s lair, but she knows she has to. She might never have wanted to become pack leader, but the responsibility’s hers either way. Her actions have caused Victor Howell to show up on her doorstep with a small army, and she’s going to have to face the music.

Mrs. Farley waves at her energetically from the living room window the moment she sees her approaching on the sidewalk. She’s at the door, pulling it open before Briar’s even set foot on the porch. “So glad you’re here,” she enthuses. “The weather’s been so nice lately, hasn’t it?”

She ushers Briar into her living room. The layout is distantly familiar; Briar’s been here once or twice before, brought along by her mother on business visits. But not often. More often, on those occasions, Mom had her older child and heir trudging sullenly after her.

“Tea?” Briar accepts a cup of something herbal and fruity-smelling. Even though caffeine has little effect on shifters in general and none at all on alphas, their heightened sense of smell lends itself to appreciation of a good blend.

“First of all, congratulations!” Mrs. Farley says brightly. “To tell the truth, I was a little concerned after the events of, er, the night of the full moon. But I was proven wrong! Always fussing over nothing, my Vinny likes to complain.” She gives a little laugh. “I suppose folks my age don’t understand the power of young love! Victor Howell’s son, my goodness!”

Briar will have to get used to every wolf she passes being able to smell her mate on her. After the cool impersonality of the city, it’s more than a little jarring.

“Thanks,” she says, refusing to squirm. “But there’s no way you called me here just to congratulate me on the sex.”

“Well, your choice of mate certainly won’t hurt our pack’s standing in the area! But yes, there’s quite a bit more. Let’s get started, then, shall we?”

First, she asks for Briar’s contact information. “We’d both rather not have to go through Rye for everything! And we’ll need to update all the other packs, so they know how to contact our leader.”

Briar’s phone number is entered into the shifters’ database without comment; Briar’s email is not.

“Maybe we should make you a new account,” Mrs. Farley says delicately.

“If proximacentauripaladin was good enough for my old job, it’s good enough for this,” Briar growls.

Torin had helped her come up with it when they were in middle school. “Proxima Centauri is a red dwarf,” he’d said, smirking down on her with the advantage of his recent growth spurt. But he’d let her help come up with sarcasticstickman666, so it was fair.

Torin will soon be gone from her life again. She’s not giving up a single piece of him.

“Next…” Mrs. Farley taps at her phone. “We have reports of an unusual creature sighting in the area.”

She brings up a photo and presents it to Briar. The image is blurry and out of
