Chapter Fourteen

Elspeth Gable

After a while they’d stopped knocking on the door and left me alone, but I could still hear them out there talking amongst themselves. Every now and again I checked the peephole and it seemed as though the group of journalists changed in between times. I guessed some were giving up or trading off with others. The landline that had come with my internet connection had never rung before, but since that morning I’d had ten calls in an hour and had finally taken the plug out of the wall. It was like being under siege.

I’d kept notifications off on my mobile, but checked every hour or so for messages from Catherine. She’d texted once to ask if I was alright. I’d said that I was fine and Cam was gone. Then I’d heard nothing. She was probably busy. I’d packed up a bag with clothes, wash-bag and various important oddments, but with nowhere to go I was stuck.

It was embarrassing really, that none of my old friends would even get back to me to ask if I was alright. Let alone to offer to take me in. I knew that I was mostly to blame. Since leaving uni I’d had little time for anything but work. Even the weekends had been spent in a depressed funk in my flat, or wandering aimlessly around the high-street shops to pass the time and get some human interaction without having to commit to real plans. I’d just found it difficult to maintain my friendships and they’d lapsed.

Still, I’d hoped that one of my former housemates or friends would understand what I was going through. My picture was all over the papers after all, they knew I was in trouble. Yet I hadn’t even had a text or message to ask if I needed anything or even to check if I was alright. If something like this had happened to them I’d have been on the phone right away, depression or no. But I was being ignored by everyone except the press.

In an attempt to distract myself I’d put the Xbox on and winkled the broken disc drive open with a screwdriver to put a game in. Since I couldn’t focus on a fantasy novel, I had to settle for a more direct distraction. It was comforting to journey around a fantasy world, slinging lightning bolts and befriending elves, dwarves and mages. Facing an army of corrupted orc-like creatures, it was easy to forget the photographers outside my door. At least the hideous trolls weren’t chasing me with microphones.

I was so engrossed that the violent buzzing of my mobile made me jump. I checked the display, saw that it was Catherine, and answered.

“Evening,” Catherine said, sounding tired but relaxed. “Just checking in, well, that and I wanted to see if you needed that lift?”

I felt my face burn with embarrassment. “Actually I haven’t been able to find anywhere to stay,” I admitted.

“Oh, are you waiting to hear?”

“Well…no, actually I haven’t heard back from anyone.
