Reid knocked on Kenzie’s door.

No answer.

He checked his phone. Eleven a.m. Her office had said she was working from home today. Her car was in the lot reserved for residents, so she hadn’t gone far, unless it was with someone else. He turned and gazed over the landscaped lawns and down to the water’s edge. No lone blonde figure. He was about to leave when he heard the latch being pulled back.

“Ah, there you are.” She looked like she’d just rolled out of bed. Tousled hair, smudged eyeliner, adorably disheveled. She wore leggings and a long T-shirt. He couldn’t resist a grin. “Big night?”

“You could say that. Come in.” She turned away, leaving the door open for him.

“Ingleman’s party?”

“Yeah.” She ran a hand through her hair, but it got stuck, so she gave up. “I need coffee.”

He followed her into the kitchen. “How was it? Did you find out anything?”

“Yes and no.” After the coffee was on, she sat down at the kitchen table. “I learned that he’s arrogant, self-assured, cocky, and doesn’t believe in monogamy.”

Reid stared at her. “You didn’t—?”

“Of course not. He hit on me, that’s all.”

Reid sat down opposite her. “With his girlfriend there?”

“She’d gone by then.”

Reid didn’t know what to say. “I hope you weren’t contemplating doing anything stupid.”

She tilted her head. “Define stupid.”

“Kenzie…Ingleman’s dangerous. I don’t want you alone with him.”

She blinked at him. “You don’t want? Isn’t that my decision?”

“That’s not what I meant.” Shit, he wasn’t explaining himself very well. The last thing he wanted to do was sound like an overprotective boyfriend. He knew he had no right to dictate what she did or who she saw—except he cared about her. More than he wanted to.

“I’m worried about you, that’s all.”

That was the truth.

Ingleman was a shark, a hunter, and he didn’t like the thought of her in his sights. It wasn’t anything other than that.

She got up to pour the coffee. “Want one?”

He gave a distracted nod.

“Look, you don’t have to worry. I know where to draw the line.”

“Okay, good. I apologize. I didn’t mean to come off as—”

“Reid, it’s okay. I know you’re concerned, but really, I’ve got this.” She flashed him a tired smile as she put down his coffee.

“Thanks.”

“I did meet someone else, though.” She took a sip and briefly closed her eyes. “Aah, that’s good.”

He waited for her to go on.

“An associate of Ingleman’s. Now he was interesting.”

“Oh?” Reid frowned. “What’s his name?”

“Carlisle Harrington. Have you heard of him?”

He rolled the name over in his mind. “Can’t say I have.”

“Neither had I, so I Googled him. Couldn’t find a single mention of him anywhere. Not even a reference. It’s as if he doesn’t exist.”

“Maybe it’s a false name?”

“It’s possible. Anyway, he knows Ingleman from way back, and he told me a lot about him.”

“Like what?”

“Like how he started the business. He had a wealthy backer, a lawyer who acted as a silent partner. When the company took off, Ingleman bought him out.”

“Nothing suspicious about that. It happens every day.
