Chapter thirty-five
âTom Fraser works somewhere round here,â said Wilcox. âPerhaps we can arrange to have a chat with him.â
âYes, give him a ring,â said Murphy. âIâd rather see him without the wife in attendance; he might be a bit more forthcoming on his own.â
âHeâll meet us in the reception at one pm,â said Wilcox, leading the way to another tall building just off Cabot Square.
Tom Fraser appeared at the appointed time with a ready smile and a firm handshake. Quite an attractive man, Murphy thought. So why had his wife been sleeping with Justin Beattie? He led the way to a cluster of seats situated at some distance from the reception desk. Probably didnât want to be overheard, Murphy decided, although in such a vast space there wasnât much danger of that.
âThank you for seeing us, Mr Fraser,â she began. âAs you will know, weâre talking to everybody who knew Justin Beattie.â
He nodded. âOf course. Terrible shock.â
âPerhaps we can begin by asking you how long you knew him for?â
âAbout four years, I think. Since they moved in.â
âAnd relations have always been good?â
He hesitated. âOf course, youâll know about our little fracas, wonât you?â
âBit more than a fracas, wasnât it?â said Wilcox. âYou ended up in hospital.â
âWell, yes, just for observation. Nothing serious.â He smiled.
âAnd can you tell us what brought it about?â
He sighed. âJustin was under the impression that I had given Stanley â thatâs his stepfather â some dubious investment advice.â
âAnd had you?â
âNot as far as I was aware. It was at a party at Christmas. Weâd all had a few drinks. I probably did make some observations to Stanley, but I never expected him to act upon them. It wasnât investment advice as far as I was concerned.â
âIn that case, you must have been pretty angry when he attacked you.â
âI wasnât angry at the time because I was unconscious. When I came round, I was pretty shocked. My wife had witnessed the immediate aftermath and she was convinced that Justin had not intended to seriously injure me. So, I didnât press charges.â
âThat was very magnanimous of you,â said Murphy. âIf somebody had put me in hospital, I would be tempted to press charges.â
âBut these are my next-door neighbours. We have to go on living next door to each other. And who the hell wants to get involved in litigation?â
âThat makes sense,â Murphy conceded. âBut you must have harboured some sort of ⦠residual grudge.â
âWhich led me to kill him a couple of weeks later? No, absolutely not.â
Murphy looked at him for a moment. âDid you know anything about Justin Beattieâs financial situation?â
âNo, none of my business. He was working for Watson Fullerton, so I assume he was well rewarded.â
âSo, if a man in his position did have financial problems, what would that be due to?â
He shrugged. âI donât know. An expensive mistress? A drug or gambling habit? Too many fast cars? Any of the above, or none of them, or something else entirely. None of those apply to Justin, by the way.
