We drove through manicured hedges until we came to a wrought iron gate for an exclusive condo building on the other side of Tampa Bay. Guards stood ready to wave people through to their residencies or redirect to the valet down the street for a back entrance reserved for servants and staffers. The guard bent to look at us, took our IDs for reference, called them in. A voice came back and approved us to drive down to the back entrance. Far less prestigious than the main entrance. Valets jogged around as their boss gave directions for the evening.

Constance and I got out of the car and grabbed our shoe boxes while these guys practiced on the arriving staff.

“Oh my gosh. Kinsley?” a familiar face asked.

“Holy crap, Frat Toy!” I dug through files in my mind for his name. “Sorry, I mean Brayden, right?”

He nodded and stared like his jaw couldn’t close.

“Take good care of my baby, Frat Toy,” Constance told him and passed the keys before grabbing my hand to order me along with her. “Leave the dorm rooms behind, Kins. I need you in Spring Break bartender mode. You’re not here as a guest. Professional.”

“When did you get tattoos?” Brayden called after me, but Constance refused to allow me to answer him. I cast a helpless wave over my shoulder.

“Yeesh. Maybe I’m not cut out for this job if I can’t even make polite conversation.”

“You can make polite conversation with the guests who need something from you. If any of them try to buy you for a night, get away from them. If any of them start asking you personal questions, you don’t give them any truth. Be a different character for the night. Sometimes sex traffickers worm their way into these to shop for new girls. Sometimes they use other women our age to do the luring in. If you see anything suspicious, tell Chad or me. You don’t leave without me. I don’t leave without you. Understood?”

“Why didn’t you tell me this shit yesterday before you told Chad I’d come with you?”

“Because you wouldn’t have come. I need this. I meant what I said about this opening doors for you to make extra cash when you move out into the real world. Besides, the same bad people shop at the bar, grocery stores, playgrounds. I’d bet even some are on your campus.”

“Omigosh! That’s horrendous. How can you tell?” I asked.

“I’m street. I just know. We can talk more about this later. For now, let’s get to our places and learn our tasks. Wipe the fear off your face.”

“Damn, Constance. I’m sorry for upsetting you.”

Several others trekked in the same direction across manicured grassy areas before we filed inside a back door up a flight of stairs that made me think of Klive chasing me in my father’s building. God, please let Klive show up. Please. Don’t let anything bad happen to me for walking on the wild side for once in my life.

“Kins, I’m not upset with you.
