CHAPTER SIXTEEN

As they entered the derelict flat, Sam felt like he was stepping back in time.

It had been nearly three years since he had last been in the building, and nothing had changed within the apartment itself apart from the thick layer of dust and the clear infestation of rats. The entire building was a shell of a property, with the funding running out as soon as Etheridge had gone to ground, and now it stood, uncompleted. A concrete reminder that the austerity within the city of London wasn’t as alive as many thought. A dank smell hung in the air, and Sam stepped across the naked floorboards to the window and with considerable effort, jarred it open. Outside, the traffic was sparse, with the majority of the London traffic heading into the city centre. The abandoned building had once been offering the promise of luxury apartments in the popular Richmond area. Now, it stood as a symbol of over-ambition. For the first time in years, fresh air infiltrated the room, and Sam stood, hands on his hips, and thought back to the time they’d spent here.

Once Sam had killed Chapman, which he did with a box cutter across the throat, Sam had escaped.

It was only the call of duty to stop his old comrade, Matthew McLaughlin, from blowing up a hospital that saw Sam back in chains. After turning down the opportunity to join another shady government operation, Sam was expected to continue the life sentence dished out prior. Etheridge intercepted, and for a week, the two of them had shared the flat. The two camp beds they had rested on were still set up, with the mattresses wrecked by whatever vermin had taken a shine to them.

Sam realised, in that moment, how much he missed Etheridge.

The man had given up everything for Sam’s cause, finding a purpose in supporting Sam’s fight that he never could in a business career that had made him millions. Once he had gone on the run with Sam, Etheridge had disappeared, and he had the skills and resources not to drop off the grid but create an entirely new one to hide behind. He’d left Sam at
