After Tony dropped me back off at my place, I tried calling James. He didn’t answer, so I tapped his number again. Straight to voice mail this time.

So, I texted him.

“Please answer.”

Nothing.

So, I texted him again.

“Please answer.”

Finally, after I sent the tenth text my phone rang.

“This better be an emergency.”

“Sorry, I was worried.”

“I needed a break from you.”

“Needed?” I asked.

“Need.”

My heart sunk. I felt tears spring to my eyes. I was grateful he couldn’t see me.

“For how long?” My voice was meek.

He sighed loudly. “Just a few days.”

“It’s been a few days.” I hated that my voice sounded whiny. “I’m worried about you. Because of King.”

“I’m a cop, Gia. I can handle myself.”

I remained silent.

“I’m being careful,” he added.

I swallowed. “You promise?”

“Yes.”
