The Ninth day of January

Master Alonso looks favorably upon my quest and promises that no detail shall be overlooked. We passed this rainy afternoon reviewing the list of timbers required for the hull, all of which, I am pleased to report, will be the finest white oak. Once a year, Alonso and his master carpenter, José de Arbora, visit the forests to select lumber for their ships. In the winter, the trees they have marked are felled and sent on their way.

The Eleventh day of January

Alonso, José, and I passed much of this morning with two lumber merchants who were attempting to justify their high prices. They complained incessantly about the difficulty of transporting wood to the city. Alonso countered their claims by suggesting that the Guadalquivir River does all the work. “It flows directly from the mountains to the sea and passes right by our shipyard on its way. All you have to do is throw the logs in and, two hundred miles later, pull them out!”
