Democratization of Supercomputing
While big data analysis has been feasible for government organizations and some companies for a few years, it has historically been quite expensive. Huge companies like Google and Walmart were early adopters, as can be expected. But we now see the democratization of big data in technical developments combined with cheap cloud-based services from companies like Microsoft or Amazon that enable small companies to build their own big data systems. This enables them to gather new insights, acquire new knowledge, and even build new data-based products.
When speaking of big data, we often discuss the three Vâs: the Volume (data size), the Velocity (speed of the data flow), and the Variety (how unstructured the information is). Previously, it was reasonably easy to get two out of the three, but until recently, it has been very expensive to get all three at the same time. This is changing. Big data has made affordable commercial supercomputing a reality. Data mining and data processing can now be performed at scale at relatively low cost, often on distributed systems and parallel processing using hundreds or even thousands of computers at the same time.
While advanced computing hardware can be impressive, one new software package made big data possible in wider circles. This software platform is Apache Hadoop, the most popular solution for big data processing.
