Case Study: Black Twitter

Many of us who work with data swipe lots of data in different formats and funnel it to necessary datasets without paying much attention to equity and our humanity. For instance, my Black Twitter Project (https://brandeismarshall.wixsite.com/blacktwitterproject) centered on investigating real-time answers to information-gathering inquiries, including but not limited to: who makes up Black Twitter; who are the core and influential members of Black Twitter; which topics, issues, and/or movements are trending; and when are these topics, issues, and/or movements discussed in specific time frames. This project features the collection and evaluation of Blacktags (racialized hashtags), topics, and prominent figures in the Black community.

Data was scraped during the live broadcast of the Oscars in 2016–2018.14 The focus intended to highlight how primarily Black actors' contributions to the film industry were restricted. Hashtags, Blacktags, and keywords were preselected to serve an initial filter to get more relevant tweets (see Table 6.3).
