When Joey got to the office, she was greeted with a large bouquet of red roses in a crystal vase on her desk. She hesitated, her mind still spinning with the case details.

Flowers…?

She walked slowly into the room. There had to be at least two dozen perfectly red roses in the vase on her desk. Their sweet smell filled the room as she approached them.

She touched one of the velvety petals and smiled to herself. This was hardly a well-placed trap, like the mysterious letter she’d gotten before. And roses were expensive. No one spent that kind of money on someone they’re trying to ward off. A card stuck out from the center. Joey picked it out, but she didn’t have to read it to know who the flowers were from.

Okay, so, I suck at the whole space thing. Go out with me tonight?

—Mason.

She shook her head. Normally, she might be annoyed by this act of contrition from Mason, but…this was sweet. Mason was really trying his best to win her affections back.

She pulled out her phone and called him. It rang twice before he picked up.

“Mason Greenley.”

“This is your way of giving me space, huh?” she said.

He chuckled. “Told you I suck at it. I guess it’s my one toxic trait.”

“Just one?”

He sighed. “Yeah, okay, I deserved that. I just woke up this morning, and I couldn’t stop thinking about you. Was it too much? I really did my best to scale back.”

She looked back over at the giant floral arrangement. “Are you trying to tell me that you were thinking of burying me in roses, Mr. Greenley?”

“Hm. That is too much, huh?”

She laughed. “A bit, yes.” She reached out and touched one of the roses. She always loved the feel of rose petals in particular. “They are lovely, Mason. I appreciate them.”

“I’m glad you like them.” He paused then said, “So did you read the card?”

“I did.”

“And?”

She paused, thinking about their last little talk. She still felt put out by his behavior, but…he was trying. He did apologize after all. Maybe his little outburst was just an isolated incident.

“Yeah,” she said. “Let’s do dinner tonight.”

“Great. I know this great restaurant—”

“No, no, I want to eat in tonight. Let’s do something really informal. Like takeout in my apartment.”

“Oh?” he said, a little bit of hope in his voice.

“You’ve never been over at my place,” she said. “We’ve been dating for a while, and it seems a little weird that you’ve never seen my apartment.”

“I never questioned it,” he said. “I just figured you lived in a broom closet at your office.”

She laughed. “I can see how you’d come to that conclusion.”

Someone cleared their throat, cutting through the fog of roses and sweet talk. She turned to see Marcus standing in the doorway.

She gave him a polite smile then told Mason, “I’ll give you a call when I’m done here. All right?”

“Works for me. See you tonight.”

“See you tonight.” She hung up and walked around to the other side of her desk, sitting at her desk and turning on the computer.
