Emmett

A fter Jin and Mey left, Emmett lay on the bed with his arms crossed under his head and closed his eyes.

He’d been cooperative, teaching the girls basic words and phrases that had to do with travel and moving, but he doubted they’d retained anything. The Kra-ell language was too foreign, in sound, structure, and different forms of address for them to absorb in a few days.

The sisters had recorded the phrases he’d taught them on their devices, Mey on her tablet and Jin on her phone, and both had promised to practice before tomorrow’s lesson.

He already had Mey wrapped around his finger, but Jin was a tougher nut. Soon, he’d get her too. His charm, as well as his patience with her slow progress, were eroding her resistance and suspiciousness.

Not that Emmett had any concrete plans for them in mind, but the more people he had on his side, the better. When the time came for Kian to decide whether it was safe to allow him into their community, they might be helpful.

Once he was admitted to the clan, he would start accumulating disciples. Not for any harmful activity, of course. He wasn’t about to start a revolution. But people, humans as well as immortals, could all benefit from guidance, from a renewed sense of purpose, from being shown the path to fulfillment, and they were willing to pay a lot for it, either with money or with favors.

Good thing that he was such an amazing salesman. They would be eating from the palm of his hand.

Emmett wasn’t sure what he would do with that power either, but it was always better to have it than not. Any advantage over others was worth putting effort into.

“Tired?” Eleanor sauntered into the cell with an uncharacteristic swagger.

The woman was confident, but she wasn’t a showoff.

“Exhausted.” He licked his lips, letting her know precisely what she could do about it.

She sat on the bed next to him. “Your wish might come true sooner than later.”

Her smug expression intrigued him, and he narrowed his eyes at her. “What did you do?”

“I talked to Kian. Well, not exactly. I exchanged texts with him, but that’s semantics.”

“About what?”

“Our privacy problem. He offered a solution that Peter hates, but I love. We are switching cells. You are moving into the suite, and Peter is moving in here.”

That got his attention. “What about you, Alfie, and Jay?”

Some of her smugness evaporated. “When I’m with you and we retire to the bedroom, one of them will be in the living room. That’s the best I was able to get us. There is a camera in the suite’s bedroom, but it’s going to be deactivated. With the door closed, we will have privacy.”

That was the best news Emmett could have hoped for. Wrapping his arms around Eleanor, he lifted her and draped her over his body. “You are a miracle worker.” He kissed her long and hard.

When she came up for air, Eleanor shook her head. “We are not in the bedroom suite yet.
