MOLLY

Molly’s first thought when the gunfire started was, Thank God, the cops are here. It took just a few seconds for her to realize it wasn’t the cops who’d started shooting. Barely missing a beat, Diego pulled his gun, yelled, “Now! Move! Now!” and charged toward the entrance. “Man the exits. Take your positions! Now!”

As people screamed and ran instinctively toward the back of the gym, Molly was pushed this way and that. She was trying to watch Diego; something about this wasn’t right. It was almost as if he’d been expecting it.

“Molly, this way….” Somehow, Laura had made it across the room and was pointing to the tables at the side of the room. Those who were able were ducking beneath them, praying they’d provide shelter. Those who weren’t—those who were too old, too slow, or too badly injured from the gunfire—were panicking.

“Go.” Molly pointed to the tables with one hand and reached to the back of her jeans with the other. When she pulled her gun, Laura’s eyes widened.

“Molly, you shouldn’t—”

“I could help.” Molly was about to charge forward when another three gunshots fired. Except, this time, they weren’t outside. They reverberated off the ceiling and someone let out a blood-curdling scream. From the triage area, Chase yelled, “She’s been hit! Stop this! Stop this, now!”

But Diego wasn’t listening. He was a few feet away from the doors and was still pointing his gun at the ceiling; it was him who’d fired the shots.

Another wave of screams broke out. Some cops had made it past Diego’s men and were trying to break through the barrier at the entrance. In the middle of them was Chief Bailey. “Mr. Cruz! Tell your men to stand down and no one has to get hurt!”

Bailey was speaking to Diego, but his eyes were scanning the gym. When they landed on the injured woman, writhing on the floor while Chase tried to drag her to safety, he pointed his gun at Diego. “An innocent woman has been shot, Diego. Stop this. Now.”

Molly looked down at the gun in her hand. She could help the Chief. She could sneak up behind Diego and put a gun to his head, but his cohorts were everywhere and all of them were armed.

Laura hadn’t moved. She and Argent were waiting by Molly’s side, waiting to see what she’d do. “Molly, please. Leave this to the cops. The kids need you.” Laura looked over to where Lucky, Zack and Tommy were crouching by the wall, their arms wrapped protectively over their heads.

Finally, Molly returned the gun to her jeans. Laura was right; she could do more for the kids than she could do in a gunfight. Stooping low, she raced across the room, slowing her pace to match Laura’s as her arms burned against the resistance of her old-fashioned chair.

When they reached the others, Molly ducked down next to Lucky and put her arm around him. “It’s okay,” she said, “It’ll be over soon.”

And it was over soon; far more quickly than she’d expected.
