“Marco DeStasio has a spotless record. Not so much as a traffic ticket on this guy.” Charli swiveled in her desk chair to turn to Matthew, who was downing his third cup of coffee of the morning. “You find anything?”

Matthew let out a long sigh. “The man has no social media to speak of. At least we’ve got an address.”

Thirty minutes ago, Charli had been ready to speed over to this man’s house and demand to know why he was outside of Cobb’s place. But after discovering such little information, she had to wonder if she was making a bigger deal out of this vehicle than she should have been.

Charli ran her fingers through her short hair, pushing her bangs away from her eyes. “Maybe he wasn’t watching Bernie at all. I mean, maybe the guy had an angry phone call he was on, or he sped away because he realized he was late for work. We really don’t know.” For all they knew, it may not have even been DeStasio in the car. He was the vehicle’s owner, but perhaps another family member had been driving.

Matthew rubbed the five o’clock shadow that had formed on his chin, as it often did when they had hectic caseloads. “Let’s just keep him on our list. We don’t need to rush over to him right away, but I’m not ready to write this off, either. Something weird happened here, and my gut is telling me to keep an eye on this guy.”

Charli wasn’t going to be rude, but it wouldn’t be the first time Matthew’s gut had said something and ended up being wrong. Hell, sometimes his gut told him that a drive-through taco joint was a good choice at midnight. His gut had questionable decision-making skills that Charli didn’t always trust. She preferred to rely on good old-fashioned evidence.

“So, where do we go from here, then? We’ve already interviewed all the employees, most of which went nowhere. We’ve got an APB on Elwood Sanders and have requested a warrant to search Cobb’s home and vehicle. Maybe I should just…”

Charli pulled up the video footage of the night Candace went missing. She’d watched it several times over but held out hope that there was something she’d missed.

Matthew leaned back in his chair and groaned. “Charli, you’ve got that security footage covered. Trust me. If we’re going to find a break in the case, it won’t be from there.”

Ruth rapped her knuckles against the doorframe. “You need a break, huh? Well, here I am, the break fairy. And I’m happy to work my magic.” The sergeant’s tone was so dry, as usual, that even her joke sounded serious.

“What break is that?” Charli swiveled to face her.

“We’ve got the warrant for Cobb’s car. From what I’ve heard of your descriptions of him, I’m sure he’ll be pleased.” Ruth was just filled with sarcasm this morning.

Charli and Matthew had not exactly been generous in their descriptions of Cobb, but in retrospect, Charli felt for the man.
