He was a jerk. No one needed to tell him he’d made the wrong move. Her actions spoke louder than any words could. He saw the slight tremble of her lips, the way her eyes slid closed to hide the tears he saw collecting in them. And though he wanted to explain his actions, he knew he couldn’t.

He sat at his desk, fumbling through files of potential recruits, hoping he could go back out into the field. But no matter how hard he tried to concentrate on the files, his mind continued to go back to her. Fuck. It was as if she had his balls in a vice grip and refused to let go and it was getting annoying. More than that, it was making him wish he’d never met her. How he’d allowed her to affect him so deeply was beyond him.

At first, he’d thought it was the fact she’d been a victim when he stumbled upon her that night. The only night he hadn’t been following her. Before then, he’d followed her, learned her daily routine which wasn’t difficult. She woke up every morning at six, got ready, had breakfast with her mother, and left for work. There she’d stay until five.

He’d watch her at work. She rarely spoke to anyone outside of the few polite exchanges with her co-workers and the new girl who’d stood her up that night. He knew all about it. What he could never understand was why. The girl seemed nice enough, trying to befriend the lonely girl at the office, but there was something about her he didn’t like. Something that rubbed him the wrong way though outwardly, she had been kind.

He wondered if it were the fact she was too kind, or perhaps the fact she seemed to make it a point to secure the cubicle beside Pippa. Whatever it was, he was suspicious and, knowing Pippa would return home that evening right after work as she’d always done, he decided to follow the girl.

He followed the girl with hair so red he imagined it fire dancing upon her head. It was cut into a short messy bob that framed a face full of freckles. Other than that, there was nothing particularly interesting about the girl, except she’d paid too much attention to Pippa that day. She crossed the street and paused for a second to look behind her and he’d turned away from her. After giving it a few seconds, he turned around but she was already gone. He jogged across the street, going in the direction he felt she would go, and it only took him two minutes to catch up to her. And when he did, she was standing in front of a red brick house, having a heated discussion with a man who looked vaguely familiar.

He watched as she cowered every time the man rose his voice. Though he could barely make out the words, he could tell the man wasn’t pleased with what she was telling him.
