TWENTY-FOUR

ALEC

What a momentous fucking idiot.

Sleeping with the boss’s daughter was a surefire way to get my balls lopped off. I’d cleaned us both off and stocked the fire up with bundles of fallen branches and twigs, dressing us both in our remaining clean clothing.

My stomach rumbled as I laid down on the grass near the fire, the sky above deepest indigo as stars started twinkling high above. Before I could protest, Esther wriggled in beside me, looping my arm about her shoulders and laying her chest on my shoulder.

‘Got to keep warm,’ she said with a bratty grin as she pressed close against me. It felt too damned good to have her there, slotting in like it was where she belonged.

‘Yeah, it’s going to be a chilly night. Not a cloud in the sky.’ The stars above may be pretty, but they didn’t keep the warmth in like a blanket of cloud would. ‘How are your feet feeling?’

Her nose wrinkled, the fire throwing a warm orange cast over her freckled face. ‘Honestly, I think I’d forgotten I had feet for a while there.’

When a blush tinged her cheeks, it sent a dart to my chest. Fuck, she was the full package. Why did she have to be a McGowan? If she was anyone else, she could have been mine. I could have swept her off her blistered feet and taken her home to keep her for good.

She’d fit so perfectly in my arms, around my dick. Her kisses were like a salve to my stupid, broken heart and while her mouth was on mine, I wasn’t just the man you called when you had a problem to take care of. I was needed. She melded to my touch with that intense passion she’d been hiding so well. If I could bottle up the feeling that had poured through me, setting every nerve alight, I’d lose myself in it every second of every day. Esther could become an addiction, of that I was sure.

‘You were perfect,’ I said, smiling as she bit her lower lip. ‘Just perfect.’

‘You weren’t half bad yourself,’ she joked, her fingers brushing against my collarbone as she grinned.

‘Not half bad. I’ll have to try harder next time.’

‘I’m not sure I’d survive coming any harder.’

‘You would. You will.’

‘Until I go home.’ Her eyes dropped to my chest as I sighed.

‘Yes, until you go home. I can’t change where you're headed, but I can make your journey more exciting if you want me to.’ God, I hoped she wanted me to.

‘Why do you want to take me back so badly? What difference does it make to you?’ There was no anger behind her voice for once, like she’d finally accepted that she would go back, regardless of what happened between us while on the road.

‘I value your family’s trust in me. They are the first people who ever believed in me. They made me who I am.’

‘By giving you a job?’

‘No. By pulling me off of the streets and taking a chance with me.
