The Dungeon
Water dripped incessantly behind the wall that Ruarc leaned against. He had paced the tiny cell for days, not that he moved much. He couldnât take three full steps in any direction. He had just enough room to lay down, but he preferred not to recline upon the dirty, wet stones.
He had no idea where he was, other than some ancient dungeon that hadnât seen daylight in thousands of years.
He had no idea who had taken him, though he had an inkling it had something to do with the meetings heâd been forced to attend on Achill Island.
He had no idea why he had been taken because no one would tell him.
Then again, he hadnât seen anyone to ask since he had been hit from behind with magic and woke up in the dungeon. Surely, someone would eventually come for him, if for no other reason than to flaunt all the reasons above.
Ruarc wondered how Rordan had done with Fianna and her family. What little time Ruarc had spent with Rordan showed that once the Fae had a plan, he didnât deviate. Ruarc wished he had been there to see it because he had a feeling that Rordan triumphed.
He crouched down on his haunches and rubbed the back of his neck. He had tried magic dozens of times, but nothing budged the lock or the iron door. He had called out to Rordan, but the Fae had never appeared. Doubt crept in that Rordan hadnât come because he didnât want to, not because he couldnât hear Ruarc.
Ruarc had no idea how long he had been in the dungeon. He might not have been a saint, but he didnât deserve this. What worried him was that he couldnât use his magic. No Fae should have been able to hold him this long. Something in his magic shouldâve showed a chink in the warding being used, but it hadnât. He wasnât the strongest Fae, but he wasnât the weakest, either. He shouldâve been able to get out.
That led his thoughts to Fiannaâs brother, Dorcha, and the meetings he had run to recruit Fae. Something about the entire event had been off. Rordan had expressed doubt about them. As much as Dorcha wanted everyone to think that he ran the show, Ruarc knew that wasnât the truth. Dorcha was merely a pawn.
Then who was in charge?
Ruarcâs head jerked to the door when it suddenly swung open with a loud squeal. Two male Fae dressed in black stood before himâone Light, one Dark. Just like the Fae at Dorchaâs house that had seemed entirely out of place. These two were the same. They may look like Fae, but there was something different about them. Something Ruarc instinctively wanted to avoid.
âCome,â the Dark ordered.
Ruarc slowly straightened. âWhy?â
âYouâve been summoned,â the Light answered.
âBy whom?â Ruarc asked.
Neither answered as they reached for him simultaneously. Ruarc stepped back, ready to attack with his fists if he had to. But they moved so quickly that he didnât have time to do anything before they had a hold of him.
