Chapter 18

Derrick pulled the phone away from his ear as the Chief yelled “God Dammit! The shit has hit the fan. How in the hell did the media know that Elizabeth was connected to this case? I’ve been on the phone with the Sheriff having him ask me the same damn thing.

The media called him for confirmation since they had a source. Wanting him to comment for the viewers at home. Also asking him about a search party that the families want to have, since Elizabeth turned up dead.”

The Chief continued ranting on, “The Sheriff had to put together a search party pretty much on the spot and is actively getting volunteers as we speak. So, now we have a search party to conduct tomorrow. And I’ll tell you what, all four of your asses better be out there with the stick searching.”

Derrick was finally able to get a word in, “Sir, it must have come from the interviews James had with the family and friends of Elizabeth. He was trying to learn more about the days leading up to her disappearance.”

“Well damn! Did he at least learn anything useful since they turned our case upside down with this media shitstorm?”

“No, only that Elizabeth started dating some guy, but she was secretive about it. She didn’t want to say much at that time since it was new.”

“Well, how were the rest of the interviews that you did today?”

Derrick replied, “Nothing new was found out. We didn’t see any guy on the list that had a scar on their right knuckle.”

He sighed in frustration, “I’m not sure how the girls met him, but it isn’t looking like an employee from any of the known places we have. We completed all the interviews of the employees from the Safari that were working the two days the girls visited that establishment.”

“Well, it sounds like you are at a stalemate.” The Chief said. “Going out tomorrow to help search won’t hurt your efforts. We haven’t had any solid tips come in from the tip line. Maybe your psychic can bring us some leads, shoot that’s all we have now.”

“Sounds good, I’ll check in with you tomorrow and let you know if anything new presents.” All Derrick heard was a click. He thought, well good night to you too.

Everyone got out of the car, tired from a day of nonstop interviewing. James had met up with them once he was done with his interviews.

James laughed, “I’m glad it was you that had to talk to the Chief, probably since it was my fault that the information was leaked, since they were my interviews.”

Derrick chuckled, “Well you owe me one for taking your hit.”

They stopped on the way back to the hotel and picked up a pizza, so they all piled in Derrick’s room to eat dinner.

John commented, “We need to start eating better than this junk. I think you guys are trying to fatten me up. It’s not a good look for me to have a pizza gut.
