Chapter 12 - Lights, Action, Camera, Magic

Jane was accompanied by all her nymphs. The actress was now playing the role of a lifetime. The nymphs asked no questions. But they were not fools, either. She had never had such trusted associates before. Her agent was slime, seeking to make his percentage on her, while the publicity people sought to manufacture news about her to keep her “hot” for good or ill.

The nymphs were fans — not just of hers, but of the online Dare2Believe. She remembered the day she’d decided to join after reading a tweet from a friend and checked out the character list and saw the empress was available. Well, she knew, she was the empress of the starways in film, so why not make it official? She signed up, a role she never expected to be living — nor expected to live at the End of the World.

Worst of all she couldn’t help but fall in love with the creator of D2B — who looked to be about twenty-two and was rather cute. Helen had mentioned she’d remembered him being heavier and older — and even having had a bald spot, which was ludicrous.

She wasn’t the only actress here who seemed to have real feelings for him, either. Damn, did he have to just happen to be one of the very last men on Earth? She knew she was being drawn to him by the story itself — but even during filming she’d been drawn to her co-stars. But this was plain crazy... she was actually becoming a bit jealous of Kristen in particular — just like her character.

She sighed, knowing the pandemic was driving nearly every man on the planet berserk as if it were some kind of insane pesticide, seeking to eradicate the human race. Feeling she should be kissing George at the very least was, well, ridiculous. Yet there was such depth and a bit of despair in those eyes of his, she couldn’t help but want to hold him close.

In a generation humanity faced extinction; except, apparently, here on the island.

Med Center was now demanding every male to report for testing. It was also reporting that males could only be conceived the old-fashioned way. Dr. Forrester was reporting that females could be born aplenty through artificial means, which reflected the Curse in Dare2Believe .

On the one hand that was in keeping with the Cathartan Curse in Dare2Believe. In the land of Catha any woman who bore a son would become a queen, and know no want, ruling at her lord husband’s side.

And as Helen, one of her new friends was fond of saying, “Bludy hell.” The System was making it open season on the male population.

She waved at the guests, staff, and neo-guests — refugees that had made it to safety here on the island. As she walked down the themed streets with her court, she saw the harbor in the distance. She stopped to shop at the bazaar and bought Dare2Believe tea for herself and the nymphs.
