‘Calm yourself, Major,’ said Madame Legrand coldly. ‘You’re not in the navy now.’

I rolled the dice quickly before they could start squabbling. For a while everything went swimmingly, although Madame Legrand went into a sulk whenever she landed on an eel. I was neck and neck with Madame Legrand, and we both needed a six to win. Throwing a four would land on a very long eel. It was Madame Legrand’s turn.

‘Throw a four, throw a four,’ I said (in my head of course).

Madame Legrand threw a four.

‘Six – I win!’ she cried, snatching the dice up and moving her counter to the last square.

What?! ‘That was a four!’ I exclaimed. ‘You have to go down that eel.’

Myrtle nudged me, hard. ‘Darcy . . .’

Madame Legrand glared. ‘It was a six.’
