CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE: DANTE

Staring down at Jack’s quiet form, I breathe deep to control my temper. Not only am I angry about the fire, but seeing that pitiful excuse for a man standing next to my woman makes my blood boil.

Something about his stance told me I arrived just it time to protect her. My stomach churns at the thought of him touching her. Tally and I were going to have a long talk about staying away from him.

But our discussion would have to wait. Right now, my focus is on my men.

The constant beeping gives me an audible update on his vitals as I watch him breathe in and out, the oxygen mask steaming up. He’s still covered in soot. It cakes his clothes, hair and face. Besides the burns on his arms, minor burns mark his shirt and jeans.

The same nurse who found me in the waiting room comes in carrying a shallow pan with a sponge and a pair of scissors. “I’m Gina, Dr. Chambers wants me to clean the patient so she can examine him.”

I nod, moving out of her way. Leaning against the far wall, I watch as she carefully removes his boots and socks before cutting off his jeans. When she moves the scissors up to his kutte, I shift, ready to stop her from mutilating it. Before I can say anything, she carefully cuts along the upper seam. I nod in approval. She made it easy to repair. However, after saving Grimm’s life, I was certain his days of wearing the prospect kutte were over. He’d earned his patch.

Gina methodically removes his shirt before gently washing off the soot that covers his arms and face. Tally enters just as she finishes. She locks eyes with me before moving to the bed to examine her patient.

“He has some burns on his arms and hands.” She says, gently lifting his hand with hers. “Nothing serious. He’ll be in some pain, so I’ll prescribe some pain medication. Apply a burn salve. Keep him on oxygen through the night.”

“He’s still unconscious,” I start, but stop when his head rolls back and forth. Then his eyes pop open.

“There you are, Jack.” Tally says, smiling down at him. “Not sure if you remember me? I’m Dr. Chambers. Tally.”

Jack coughs as he nods. He grabs for the mask, but Tally stops him.

“You need to keep it on, your body needs the oxygen.” Tally tells him. “You can speak with the mask on. Does it hurt anywhere besides your arm, hands, throat and lungs?”

He shakes his head.

“Good. How about the level of pain? One through ten. Hold up fingers if you don’t want to talk.”

Jack glances at me before holding up four fingers.

Tally rolls her eyes. “Right.” Turning to Gina she says, “get his IV setup.” Gina picks up her supplies before leaving the room.

“Grimm?” Jack rasps out.

“He’s recovering.” Tally says, calming him.

“I need to talk to Dante, it’s important.” He tells her. Jack’s eyes lock with mine.

“Can you give us a minute?” I ask Tally.
