Chapter 10

Suspicions Increase

Icy chills tingled up Danny's spine, and he caught his breath sharply.

"Did…did you hear that?" Mike whispered, his voice quivering.

Danny reached up quickly and clapped his hand over his cousin's mouth. "Shh!" he warned.

On the other side of the thin partition, Doc Jessamine was saying, "Come on in and let me get this door closed. I don't know why you took a chance on coming here tonight. You'll ruin everything."

"But I had to see you. There've been some new developments."

They must have walked across to the other side of the room, because their voices faded. Danny moved quietly to the door connecting the two rooms and pressed his ear against it.

"We've got an appointment in Point Barrow," the government agent retorted irritably. "And there isn't a thing I can do about anything until we get up there."

"I figured you ought to know this now," the stranger went on. "They found him."

"They did!" Dr. Jessamine exclaimed. "When?"

"Yesterday afternoon. I got in touch with W as soon as I had the word. When we couldn't make contact with you, he thought I'd better come up here and warn you as soon as I could."

There was a long, tense silence. They could hear the heavy, measured footsteps of someone pacing the floor.

"That's a tough break," Doc Jessamine said. "It changes everything."

"That's the way we figured," the strange voice said. "And we thought you ought to know about it right away."

Danny pressed closer to the door. For the moment he scarcely dared to breathe as he listened. Mike, who was crouched in front of the young woodsman, was biting his lips nervously.

"We're going to have to change our plans," Doc Jessamine began. "This is—"

At that very instant, and without warning, Mike coughed. It was a short, stifled little cough, but Doc Jessamine stopped speaking abruptly. "Did you hear that?" he demanded.

"No," his caller answered. "I didn't hear anything. But to get back to our business, W wanted me to find out how you plan to carry on and then report to him, so that he—" The man stopped suddenly in the midst of his sentence.

Danny touched Mike's arm significantly. Doc Jessamine must know that they were awake and listening. For two full minutes, all was still. Then they heard the sound of footsteps coming toward the door connecting the two rooms.

"Danny," Doc Jessamine called softly as he rapped on the door. "Danny! Mike! Are you boys awake?"

Danny clapped his hand over Mike's mouth again, but there was no need for it. His cousin could not have spoken had he wanted to. Mike's lips were trembling as he and Danny squatted closer to the floor and almost stopped breathing.

Doc Jessamine knocked again. "I want to talk to you. It's important, Danny." When there was no answer, he stepped away from the door.

"They must be asleep," he said, his voice tinged with relief. "I thought they would be, but we can't be too careful."

"You can say that again.
