Is it wrong to go to an ex’s funeral? Let’s examine the evidence.

I feel guilty that I haven’t told Tom, so that suggests it’s a yes. I feel nervous about being here, which again hints that I made a mistake. And I feel as if I don’t belong here, standing on the edge of so many grieving family members, which again tells me that I’ve done the wrong thing in coming to this event.

But I also feel sad for the man everybody is here for today. I can see the coffin at the front of the chapel and know that it contains Shaun, a person I used to love. More so, he used to love me too, so in that respect, maybe it would be strange if I weren’t here.

I spent the last few days mulling over the decision of whether or not to be here ever since Nicola sent me that message with the details of the funeral. At first, I was a definite no, and I said as much in my reply to her. It simply felt too strange to think about saying my goodbyes to a man I dated eighteen years ago but have only seen once since. But Nicola’s reply got me thinking. She told me that she assumed I would want to go, having been so close to the deceased. She also said something that made me feel a little guilty.

She said that she believed Shaun would have attended my funeral if the situation had been reversed.

That got me thinking, and it wasn’t the only thing. In the days after the discovery of Shaun’s body, the timelines of my social media accounts were flooded with posts from old school acquaintances who were all discussing the tragic news as well as campaigning for a big show of support for Shaun’s family at the funeral. Maybe it would have been different if the circumstances surrounding his death were altered, but the fact it was suicide seemed to make everybody determined to show how much Shaun was really loved.

It seemed like everyone in our school year was going, and Nicola told me as much, saying that she was going to attend to offer her support too. But I was still conflicted, aware that I would have to mention it to Tom and assuming he might find it strange that I wished to go to the funeral of an old partner.

I tried to put myself in his shoes and imagine what I would feel like if he told me he was going to the funeral of one of his exes. Would I feel uncomfortable, or would I understand? But my imagination has never been great, even before I suffered the mysterious head injury at sixteen, so I found it impossible to predict how he would react. That might explain why I still haven’t told him.

In the end, my decision was made based on something I read online. I’d resorted to good old Google to help make the decision
