Morty claps a hand on my shoulder as I wrap my knuckles with white tape. I glance up and feel the perspiration rolling from my hairline down my forehead. I wipe it away with the hem of my gray sleeveless shirt.

“What is it?” I ask.

“There’s a new guy here tonight. He’s got a real reputation. Mean motherfucker. Big, too. You interested?”

I chuckle and tear the tape with my teeth. “Did you really need to ask?”

“That’s my boy.” Morty grins. “I’ll make it happen. Get some bets rolling around. Want to warm up with another guy first?”

I roll my shoulders. “Nah. Send me in whenever.”

“Good man.”

Morty disappears into the dense crowd, and I adjust the bandana covering my mouth, pulling it up a little higher to rest across the bridge of my nose. The fabric is stuck to my sweaty skin. It’s hot down here tonight. There are a lot more bodies packed into the Underground than usual, and I already feel warm enough for a good brawl.

However, there’s something missing.

That oh so familiar spark of rage isn’t there tonight. In fact, it hadn’t been there since I went out for drinks with Naomi and things between her and I led from one thing to another.

My bedsheets smelled like lemons for the entire next day in the wake of her visit. I dreamed about her, of her sweet kisses and the way her hips swayed when she walked and the sounds she made when she writhed in pleasure on my bed.

She’d left more than just the scent of her shampoo in my bed. She’d also left a mark inside me that I couldn’t identify, something unfamiliar and deep and warm. Something I’d never carried inside of me before. It was almost unnerving. Almost.

I’d barely spent any time at the office today, and the time I had spent there I’d been too caught up in meetings for us to actually have a chance to check in and see how the other was doing. We shared a couple smiles from down the hall, and she dropped off my afternoon coffee while I was on the phone, but when I left the office she was scheduling meetings with city council, and I ducked out while she twirled the cord phone around her forefinger.

I wanted to talk to her about things, but I didn’t know where to start.

She was the one who felt like we’d made a mistake, after all. Not me. In fact I’d have been willing to keep this thing going.

You’re going soft, I think sharply. And there is no room for that in a Masterson.

I must keep my eye on the prize. Now is not the time to get distracted by pretty green eyes and a tight body made for sex. Now is the time to buckle down and focus on my career. Especially with my father hovering over my shoulder like a predatory bird waiting to descend on me and pick my bones clean. And when he was through with me,
